Jakarta, February 7, 2025 – PT Bank OCBC NISP Tbk (OCBC) together with the OCBC Group, supports environmental conservation efforts to mitigate climate change by planting more than 21,000 mangrove tree seedlings during the 2024-2025 period. The planting will be carried out in various strategic locations in Indonesia, including Bangka Belitung in Sumatra, along the coast of Java from Tangerang, Central Java, Bali, to South Sulawesi. This activity has begun with the planting of 1,000 mangrove seedlings with OCBC volunteers at KSS Beach, Sukawali Village, Tangerang Regency, and will be followed by the planting of 10,000 other seedlings on the Trimulyo coast, Semarang City.
“Mangrove trees have a vital role in preventing erosion and maintaining the balance of coastal and marine ecosystems. This initiative is a continuation of the previous OCBC program called SPARTA, in which around 5,000 mangrove seedlings were planted in Pulang Tidung, Seribu Islands. This activity, which was held together with the OCBC Group, is OCBC's commitment to continuing efforts to mitigate climate change and preserve the environment,” stated Aleta Hanafi, Brand and Communications Division Head, OCBC.
Through this initiative, it is expected that 11,000 mangrove seedlings will be planted in 2024, with an estimated absorption of 1.2 tons of CO2eq (Carbon dioxide equivalent) per year. By the end of 2025, the absorption target is expected to double to 2.4 tons of CO2eq with the addition of planting 10,000 mangrove seedlings.
Sukawali Village and Trimulyo Area: Priority Areas for Mangrove Ecosystem Recovery
Sukawali Village was chosen as one of the locations for planting mangrove seedlings considering the declining condition of the coastal ecosystem due to increasing abrasion over the past two decades. In a period of 20 years, the coastal area in Sukawali Village has shrunk by up to 100 meters, threatening the natural habitat and the lives of the community that depends on the sustainability of the environment. Meanwhile, on the coast of Trimulyo, Semarang City, there was a conversion of the mangrove ecosystem into a pond area so that tidal flooding and abrasion could not be avoided.
Furthermore, together with the Lindungi Hutan Foundation, the local community, and farmers, OCBC continues to ensure the care and monitoring of the growth of mangrove seedlings so that they can grow optimally. OCBC hopes that through this program, the coastal area of Sukawali Village can recover and be able to provide long-term benefits to the surrounding community.
