OCBC Drives Sustainability Across the Value Chain: From Business Operations and Green Financing to Circular Economy and Fashion

24 Jul 2025

Jakarta, 24 July 2025 — PT Bank OCBC NISP Tbk (OCBC) continues to embed sustainability deeply across its operations, from upstream to downstream, integrating it into core business practices, sustainable financing solutions, and CSR programs aligned with circular economy and sustainable fashion principles. These initiatives reflect OCBC’s commitment to making sustainability a core corporate strategy, impacting both business and social value chains.

To achieve Net Zero by 2050, OCBC has implemented a holistic ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategy across its operations. One standout initiative is the OCBC Space office in BSD, which has received IFC EDGE: Advanced (Zero Carbon Ready) green building certification due to its adoption of energy-efficient technology and sustainable water management systems. OCBC also became the first bank in Indonesia to support renewable energy use through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from PLN and to offset unavoidable emissions through carbon credits traded via Indonesia’s Carbon Exchange.

“Sustainability for us goes beyond moral responsibility; it is the bedrock of long-term business resilience. From operational efficiency to financing schemes, everything we design is geared towards driving responsible and future-ready transformation,” said Heriyanto, Director of OCBC.

On the financing front, OCBC has embraced responsible financing principles, incorporating ESG risk assessments into its business banking credit evaluations. As of 31 December 2024, the Bank had disbursed IDR 37.85 trillion in sustainable financing—growing 17% year-on-year; with 42% allocated to Green Financing and Sustainability-linked Loans (SLL).

SLL schemes are available to companies across various industries, not limited to specific sectors, as long as the borrowers set ambitious and relevant sustainability KPIs. To date, OCBC has disbursed SLLs across palm oil, forestry, chemical manufacturing, and real estate sectors—some even linked to social impact metrics.

Beyond SLLs, OCBC provides green financing for renewable energy, sustainable natural resource management, waste management, green buildings, green mortgages, and more. OCBC also became the first bank in Indonesia to issue a Green and Gender Bond, with a facility of up to IDR 2.75 trillion.

OCBC also brings sustainability to life through impactful social initiatives. From 2024 to 2025, in collaboration with the OCBC Group, the Bank is targeting the planting of over 21,000 mangrove seedlings in key coastal areas such as Bangka Belitung, Northern Java, Bali, and South Sulawesi. The initiative involves employees and is funded through the Bank’s circular waste management program.

Empowering Communities Through Circular Fashion and Local MSMEs

As part of its sustainability mission, OCBC has launched a circular fashion initiative that blends environmental innovation, MSME empowerment, and lifestyle awareness. Partnering with sustainable fashion designer Adrie Basuki and social enterprises such as Precious One, Rappo, and XS Project, OCBC has transformed retired employee batik uniforms into meaningful fashion items.

Aleta Hanafi, Brand & Communication Division Head OCBC stated “Circular fashion showcases how creative approaches can generate real and inclusive impact. This collaboration connects creative communities, MSMEs, and environmental issues into a unified, inspiring, and sustainable movement. It’s not only about social impact but also about redefining sustainability as a lifestyle.”

The upcycled collection, designed with Adrie Basuki and OCBC’s MSME partners, features contemporary fashion items made from repurposed OCBC batik uniforms. These include eco-friendly tote bags, laptop sleeves, vests, cable huggers, pouches, key covers, bandanas, and pencil toppers. The initiative also serves as a growth platform for OCBC’s supported MSMEs in creative, textile, and recycling sectors.

More than just a textile waste management effort, this program is part of OCBC’s broader sustainability strategy. The proceeds from sales available via the “Gerobak CSR” platform are fully channeled to support mangrove planting in regions across Indonesia.

“As part of its continued commitment to responsible waste management, OCBC also became the first bank in Indonesia to introduce new batik uniforms made from 90% recycled polyester. The fabric is sourced from recycled PET plastic bottles and developed into modern batik patterns that symbolize the Bank’s sustainability spirit,” closed Aleta.
