Freedom from Gender Bias: OCBC Promotes an Inclusive Environment for All

13 Aug 2025

Jakarta, 13 Agustus 2025 – Independence is not only about freedom from colonialism, but also freedom from limiting biases. In Indonesia, many women and men are still constrained by norms and stigmas that restrict their roles, both at home and in the workplace. In the spirit of Independence Day, OCBC hosted the #BaiknyaBarengBareng Media Talk, inviting speakers from the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and Aliansi Laki-Laki Baru. This event encouraged the community to redefine the meaning of independence—true freedom is when everyone can thrive without being held back by gender bias.

The initiative is part of the ongoing #BaiknyaBarengBareng 2025 campaign. With the theme “Journey to Freedom from Gender Bias”, the discussion highlighted the prejudice and inequality that continue to restrict people’s opportunities both at home and in the workplace. In the ever-evolving world of work, women still face various challenges in achieving gender equality. In 2023, the female labour force participation rate in Indonesia was only 55%, compared to 85% for men (BPS, 2024). Furthermore, according to the SDG Global Database, women had fewer opportunities in leadership, with only 32% of managerial positions in companies occupied by women in 2022.

Addressing this issue, Betti Alisjahbana, Independent Commissioner of OCBC and a pioneer in the technology sector, emphasized that both women and men have the potential to contribute and achieve at the highest level. “In the face of gender-based stigma, I chose to stay focused on my work and prove myself through dedication, achievement, and integrity. Women’s leadership should not be seen as an exception but as a natural part of the professional culture we are building together. In an era where talent and diversity are key competitive strengths, creating an inclusive work ecosystem is essential to unlocking everyone’s potential—without limits,” she said.

She further added that companies have a significant responsibility in ensuring these principles are realized. “At OCBC, we believe that a gender-equitable workplace will create equal opportunities for all. This is supported by our policies, development programs at all levels, and facilities that welcome and support every employee. It is further reinforced by maintaining balanced representation in strategic management positions,” she explained.

“Unequal gender norms, including conscious and unconscious bias, are one of the obstacles for women to pursue careers in the workplace,” stated Dwi Yuliawati, Head of Programmes at UN Women Indonesia. “The most obvious form is the perception that household chores and caring for family members are entirely the responsibility of women. UN Women is collaborating with the private sector to integrate the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), thereby promoting family-friendly workplace policies, as one way to increase women’s workforce participation.”

In response to these challenges, it is crucial for companies to implement inclusive policies that provide equal opportunities and create an environment conducive to women’s empowerment. Organizations that uphold gender equality and women’s rights not only drive social progress but also build more inclusive, resilient, and successful businesses and communities.

Complementing this perspective, Wawan Suwandi, National Coordinator of Aliansi Laki-Laki Baru, emphasized that change towards equality cannot be driven by women alone. “A more flexible workplace and fairer distribution of household roles will enable men and women to collaborate more effectively. Men also need the space to be fathers, husbands, and whole individuals without stigma. We need to normalize this collaboration by breaking down the idea of ‘housewives’ and embracing the concept of shared households,” according to Jundi.

He also highlighted that obstacles often come from within our immediate environment. “Too often, when women attain higher positions, there is concern that this will negatively affect their husbands’ careers. We must collectively change this narrative in order to truly achieve equality,” he added.

The discussion underlined that the journey towards equality is a collective process requiring the involvement of families, institutions, and communities. When barriers are dismantled, women are freer to contribute across social and economic spheres. This aligns with OCBC’s values, which continue to resonate with society through the #BaiknyaBarengBareng campaign. As of July 2025, the campaign has recorded 117,194 engagements, 822,152 reach, and 2,695,786 impressions across various communication channels.

True freedom is achieved when bias no longer limits progress. Because #BaiknyaBarengBareng, we can all benefit from a community that is inclusive and equal—when we work together.
