The elderly need to be more aware of the risks of digital fraud. Perpetrators can take advantage of panic, trust, and convincing communication to make the victim follow directions without first verifying.

Now, with the presence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), forms of misinformation are becoming more sophisticated, from deepfakes to voice cloning, which makes the mode of fraud even more convincing.

One of the fraud patterns that need to be watched out for is when the perpetrator disguises himself as an official party, uses a convincing or urgent reason, then directs the victim to open a link or download a certain application to obtain personal data.

Examples of fraud cases in the elderly

In one case, an elderly customer received a communication via WhatsApp from a party claiming to be a Dukcapil officer. The perpetrator offers assistance related to services for the elderly, then sends a link associated with the Digital Population Identity (IKD) and asks the customer to download the application.

The customer had provided some data before feeling suspicious. The customer then contacts TANYA OCBC to ensure the security of their account. As a security measure, the customer's banking facilities were then blocked.

The case shows that fraud does not always start with a PIN or OTP request. The perpetrator can first build trust on behalf of an official agency, then direct the victim to open a link, download an application, or provide personal data.

The mode of fraud in the name of IKD services has also received attention from the government. The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) clarified the existence of a fake WhatsApp link in the name of IKD activation and appealed to the public not to open the link because it did not come from official government channels.

To mitigate risk, it is important for individuals to understand the fraudulent flows used and ensure that any information received has been verified through official channels.

Common phishing modes

The common phishing mode takes place through the following stages:

  1. Contact by email/phone
  2. The perpetrator contacted the victim and on behalf of the Bank, government agencies, or other official parties via phone / SMS / WhatsApp in an urgent tone. They can offer help, convey important information, or ask the victim to perform certain actions without checking first.

  3. Spread of fake links to retrieve data
  4. The perpetrator sends a fake link designed to resemble the official page of the Bank, agency, or other digital channel. Victims may be directed to enter sensitive information or download specific apps.

Victims need to be aware of requests to provide:

    • Login information to OCBC mobile such as ID card, User ID, OTP and Password, or other banking information.
    • Personal data such as NIK, ID card photos, and other information that can be used to commit further fraud.
    • Instructions for clicking on links or downloading apps that don't come from official channels.

All of this data can then be misused to make unauthorized transactions or other fraudulent acts.

To ensure the security of your accounts and banking transactions, make sure to always adhere to the following #MustSay No principles :

  1. Do not open or click on links from unauthorized parties. Always know the official banking channel you have.
  2. Make sure the link you choose is correct!

  3. Provide education never to share personal information or banking credentials with any party, including those claiming to be from the Bank.
  4. Accompany parents during digital transactions
  5. Make sure your closest people/family always verify the information by contacting the family or Bank before making a decision
  6. Beware of all forms of fraudulent attempts. Immediately block phone numbers or emails that send suspicious links[M.

Digital crime is now increasingly sophisticated and often takes advantage of user negligence. Therefore, any information related to transactions and account security must be verified through OCBC's official channels before taking any action

Always remember the principle of STOP – CHECK – REPORT

If you get suspicious modes, immediately do the following 3 things:

🛑 STOP

Pause for a moment before making a decision. Don't follow the directions of the person contacting you right away, especially if they ask for personal data or send you a link.

🔎 CHECK

Make sure the information, phone number, account, and link provided have been verified through official channels. Never give PIN, OTP, password, User ID, or personal data to anyone, including parties claiming to be Bank officers or official agencies.

📢 REPORT

If you find suspicious activity or have already followed the perpetrator's instructions, immediately contact TANYA OCBC or your Relationship Manager so that security measures can be taken immediately.
